The fall camp was great! We had terrific weather: although it was cold
at night, we also had crystal-clear skies and got to see the Milky Way
and Mars. As it turned out, we wound up pitching only one tent for
Scouts... all the other Scouts wound up sleeping in shelters they built
themselves with materials they had brought with them, unbeknownst to
the leaders.

On Saturday morning, we took turns lighting fires from scratch and
With only three matches provided, several Scouts
wound up returning their spare matches. ("How many matches does it take
to light a fire? Just one: any others are merely wasted.") We felled
lots of trees, which was good, because we wound up needing them for our
pioneering project. Dinner around the campfire on Saturday night was
particularly memorable, with good food, good conversation and good
friends.
Sunday was devoted to building a big pioneering project of our own
original design: The Cavagnal Articulated Two-Way See-Saw Gateway. This
is particularly cool because it has moving parts. The see-saw has a
hinged section which hangs down, so the gate is accessible from both
sides. When a person steps on the walkway, the body weight makes the
hinged side swing down until it is straight so you can cross over it,
then it goes back up when the person steps off.
